At first, Jackson couldn't help himself.

He first stepped into Stilinski's room over the summer, though he'd been less of an active participant in the latest Beacon Hills mystery and more of an afterthought. Lahey had needed a ride and Jackson had been there to provide one, which somehow led to Jackson inviting himself up to Stilinski's room. He took one look at the floor, strewn with clothes and crumpled balls of paper, and glanced at the (mostly empty) laundry and (overflowing) garbage baskets. If asked, Jackson couldn't repeat a word of what anyone said during their little meeting because he was distracted by how he wanted to pick everything up off the floor. It was how he accidentally volunteered to some half-assed patrol duty to monitor a crew of new hunters that had rolled into town, having distractedly mumbled an affirmative while he frowned at the messy state of Stilinski's bed.

Admittedly it hadn't been the best reaction, though Oliver Queen wasn't known for having moderate reactions to anything startling. He was better with arms length, anything to keep people back and away from the core of things. Even the ones closest to him, the ones he trusted with his life. Diggle was quite possibly the chief offender in getting under his skin. He was the only one who knew the majority of his secrets and as things got... blurry it had been hard to keep the boundaries he'd set up right from the start.

For one thing, he was always Diggle. Or Dig. For the most part Oliver pretended his first name didn't even exist. It was a line in the sand and as time went and and they became closer it was harder to remember. The problem was that eventually it had slipped out. It didn't matter that they were alone. It didn't matter that it had been something quiet mumbled between kisses in the basement of the club. It certainly didn't matter that the only one who heard Oliver call him John was the man himself. It was the line crossed.

Maybe walking out hadn't been the best plan but it happened and Oliver spent the next 24 hours avoiding his own bodyguard. It was cowardice on his part. The lives of people he... of people he cared about were at risk. A partner, a friend was just as at risk but he had convinced himself it would hurt less if it was kept simple. Clearly his heart hadn't gotten that memo.

He returned to the lair the next evening, his nerve not quite back but he knew it was impossible to evade John- Diggle forever. It didn't make things any less awkward as he cleared his throat.

"...Diggle. We should probably talk."

It was their third kill ever, the fight with a class three kaiju that had been approaching the city fast. Their rig had taken minor damage, flesh wounds that had set his - their - nerves on fire. Hydra Fury was beaten up but not broken. Things would have been a lot worse if they hadn't pulled it together at the last second. Some people weren't meant to share brainwaves, but somehow the program had seen fit to pair him with Jackson. Even though they hated each others' guts they still had excellent drift compatibility.

Just went to show that the universe had a sick sense of humor.

In the aftermath Stiles was still wired from the fight, and even with the phantom pains from the damage singing along his nerves he couldn't stay still. Their jaeger was in the shop for the next two weeks and all he wanted to do was go run laps until the Jackson shaped hole in his mind went numb. It's either that or pick a fight with someone. A good plan except for the fact that closest person there to hit was the one who was just inside his head. That lingering feeling that his head wasn't his own kept making Stiles want to crawl up the walls and the last person he wanted in there was Jackson Freaking Whittemore.

And even once the neural bridge was broken he couldn't help but be completely aware of Jackson's location in relation to his own. The rhythm of sneakers on the indoor track wasn't helping him tune it all out. Maybe it was the craving for chocolate lingering on the back of his tongue. One he knew for a fact wasn't his because he'd been wanting skittles all goddamn day. Chocolate wasn't on the agenda but he still ended up making a stop at the vending machine and grabbing two bars.

The first he crammed in his mouth to maybe stop the need. The second he threw to Jackson without a word of warning. "I am so sick of having you in my head, you know that?"

It wasn't too often that Stiles got to do his work in classy locations. The people who wanted someone like him usually had him doing in house visits to lonely house wives or taking people looking for something naughty but not too shady to swinger clubs. He knew how he looked, took advantage of it even. Thankfully he'd dressed to fit the occasion in his nicest I'm Totally Not A Hooker clothes so he made it to the front desk without getting tossed out with security.

"Hey there," He leaned on the front desk for all of five seconds before the look the receptionist gave him had him straightening up. "I've got an... apppointment with Mr. Whittemore up in the luxury suite. Can you call it up to confirm?" The pursed lip look didn't go away but she picked up the phone and turned away from him. Looks like they didn't want to risk offending someone who was throwing money their way. Good to know.

All too quickly the receptionist hung up and gave him terse directions to the floor and room he'd want. "Thanks. And don't worry, I'll be gone in the morning. You won't even know I was here."

A short elevator ride later, Stiles was knocking on a door that probably cost more than his entire apartment combined. Who the hell put gold leaf on a freaking door anyways?
