[ Of the things Fushimi is actually grateful for, it's the weekend. He has Misaki to himself, and most of the time, they're attached at the hip. Now is no exception, of course, and they're sitting together on Misaki's bed. Fushimi is trying to find the manga in his hands interesting, but it's boring. He hates being bored, and he decides to announce that particular detail by dropping the book into the other boy's lap. ]
[ Yata was actually enjoying the manga he was reading. Stretched out on the bed with his legs sprawled across his best friend's lap carelessly. The protagonist had just beaten the bad guy with the power of his aura! So cool! He's startled out of his reading by Fushimi giving up. ]
Hahhn? Like what? Not like either of us have the money to do anything.
Anything. [ Fushimi grits his teeth just a little, a habit he can't seem to break when he's just a fraction annoyed by something. He plants a hand adjacent to Misaki's hip and leans over him. The position is comfortable but awkward. Still, at least he has his attention. ]
I wanted to ask you, Misaki. [ A quiet sigh. ] What would you do if you liked someone?
[ He's not as weirded out by the invasion of his space, Fushimi was always like this. Yata stares up at him, pursing his lips as he contemplates the question. ]
Prob'ly just tell them if I thought I had a chance. [ He raises an eyebrow. ] Are you finally gonna take up with one of the girls from school? I know a couple've confessed.
[ Yes, Fushimi remembers those times. Two - or had it been three? - girls at two separate times had sought him out to explain their feelings, but frankly, he hadn't been interested in that. He's barely interested in school, and that's a requirement for the future. He shakes his head. ]
No. I don't want to date a dull person. Che. [ He nervously pushes his glasses up against his face. ] They aren't like you.
[ He's reminded Misaki is a little thick, and Fushimi averts his eyes quickly, the hand he'd used to push up his glasses covering part of his mouth now. He dislikes how anxious this makes him, how he's considered what would happen if he'd be rejected. Friendship versus...more. ]
You said to go for it if I thought I had a chance. Right? [ He slowly looks back at him, eye to eye. ] I like you, Misaki.
[ Yata couldn't remember the last time he had actually taken a break and rested properly. Definitely not since Totsuka had been murdered. And now, now that the fighting and the lies are all done away with he's exhausted in ways he never realized were possible. Mikoto and Munakata were in negotiations to have things repaired on both ends, and it was almost overwhelming to be a part of it when he just wanted to curl up and pretend he didn't exist for a while. He had to get away.
He slips out of the meeting room in Scepter4's mansion unnoticed and finds a quiet alcove with a couch that he promptly collapses on. He's just so damn tired...]
[ Fushimi, too, is exhausted. Most of his unit had taken a rather hard beating; between the Red Clan and following Munakata's orders, he could barely think straight as it is. The thought of crawling into his bed is a promising one until he walks by and notices a certain boy slouching on a couch. He'd used that one many times for reading through reports since it's out of the way, and it's ironic Yata would have found it just as useful.
Gritting his teeth, hand resting on the sword at his hip, he alters his route and moves over to him. ]
You shouldn't sleep there, Misaki. There are plenty of beds on the other floors.
[ He was half dozing when Fushimi found him, and his approach jolts him awake, hand darting to the bat that he had lost halfway through the battle. He eyes Fushimi unable to summon the spark to be truly bitter. He's too tired to do much of anything except shake his head. ]
I don't know how long Mikoto-sama is going to be negotiating. I should stay close.
[ He runs a hand through his hair, absently realizing he even lost his hat. How long had it been missing? ]
Tch. They're going to be in there for a while. Nothing is going to happen. [ He eyes the bat, a little wary of it and not wanting to get bashed in the face for a statement that's obviously true. When Misaki messes with his hair, it causes some of it to stand up, and Fushimi presses the back of his hand to his mouth to hide the smirk. Munakata had told him to be polite. Even Awashima-san might have acted if he disregarded that order. ]
You can relax upstairs. Akiyama will report to me if there are any changes. [ A pause. ] Trust me.
[ Maybe it was a lie that he was too tired to be bitter, because when Fushimi says 'Trust me' he snorts. It... it still hurts, seeing him wearing that goddamn blue uniform.
Stubbornly. ] I'll stay here. [ It's stupid, but he also has to get another jab in. ] I'm fine without you.
Fine? You're fine? [ Fushimi can see how untrue that is. Yata is worn out, thinner than he remembers. There's also something about his eyes that says otherwise, and he tsk-ed hard. ] You still can't lie, Misaki.
[ He grabs his wrist - the one holding the bat - and gives him a tug. A group of subordinates walk by as he does, chattering quietly, and he glares at them in silent warning to move on. ] Come with me.
[ He stumbles to his feet but then jerks his hand away from Fushimi, taking a step back and tries to fall into a defensive stance. Unfortunately he's left several openings that he doesn't even realize are there. ]
I already told you my answer, Saru. I'm not going anywhere with a traitor.
[ He'd consulted Misaki's horoscope for this specific day. It's his birthday, after all. ( Cancer is associated with the home and garden, and good Cancer gifts are often useful and practical items. ) Not that it had helped; Fushimi really didn't think Misaki would appreciate something so domestic. A random comment he'd made had pushed his decision in a completely different direction, and after they'd finally made it back to Misaki's place after a late, late dinner, Fushimi grabs his hand. ]
I have a present for you. It's in your room.
[ Finding a box big enough for it had been a chore. Getting it here had been just as annoying too. But he'd do anything for Misaki if he thought it important enough. ]
[ Dinner was a special pleasure, as was feeling totally full for once instead of just satisfied enough to last until the next meal. Yata had spent the train ride back to his apartment with his head resting on Fushimi's shoulder half dozing the entire way. Stumbling into the apartment, Fushimi's announcement catches him mid-yawn and he looks kind of bewildered. ]
I thought dinner was the present. [ It was a really good dinner, he was totally happy with that. ]
[ He'd already made sure to shut the door and had taken off his jacket, squeezing Misaki's finger and drawing him along. Fushimi shakes his head, stopping once to kiss him and play with the mussed parts of his hair. ]
I wanted to get something else. [ He steps into Misaki's room and gestures to the bed where a long box leans against it. ] There.
I told you buying dinner was enough, you know. [ But Yata can't help that little thrill at the thought of getting an actual present. He stares at the box for a moment before going over and picking it up. ]
What did you even get? [ Yata pops the lid off the box to curiously stare at the contents. ]
It's fine. [ For once, Fushimi might actually look a little embarrassed as he watches Misaki open the gift. ] I took everything into account when buying it. You said you wanted it, right?
[ Yata opens the box and stares in disbelief. It's exactly the skateboard he had been admiring for ages, but had given up on ever owning. It was expensive, and he's tentative as he picks it up and examines it like he's expecting it to disappear. ]
Saru, you didn't... This's- [ He swallows and looks up at Fushimi ] I didn't expect you t'go and buy it!
[ It had taken some adjusting to get used to the idea of seeing Fushimi on a regular basis without an attempted fight to the death being involved. They had started out meeting on neutral ground, nowhere near Homra or the Scepter4 mansion. But as months passed and trust started to reestablish itself they started hanging out in... less neutral places. One of their apartments, usually Fushimi's since Yata's was cramped, the only thing he could afford on the salary of a part time worker.
They would hang out or occasionally get a bit closer like they had before, but no matter how late he stayed over though, Yata never stayed the night. He always made some excuse to leave, but this time was different. They had been watching a movie that Fushimi didn't hate and had missed half of it due to... distractions and it was late by the time the movie ended. Long past the departure time for the last train of the night. Leaning against Fushimi, Yata averts his eye and doesn't actually look at him when he speaks up. ].
[ Fushimi is, for lack of a better word, pretty calm about this situation. He actually likes it. Having Misaki close, even if they still occasionally argue - about unimportant things mostly - or get mad at each other, is better than having him at an excruciating distance. Where he's not even able to reach him.
He slips his arm from around his shoulders, pushing his glasses up as he frowns. There's no sense of time for him like this, but he assumes Misaki wants to leave. ]
Tch. The last train's already left idiot. [ He tries to look nonchalant about it because ugh how does he even do this properly? He's getting better at things but he still stumbles every now and then. ]
It'd kill my board t'ride back to my place. [ He mumbles a bit now ] So I'm gonna have to stay here tonight.
